DAY AT THE BEACH
Kiptopeke
Situated on the Eastern Shore in
Cape Charles, Kiptopeke offers two
unguarded swimming options: the halfmile
long northern swim beach (strictly
for swimming) and the south beach,
where leashed dogs, swimming, boating,
fishing and crabbing are permitted. In
addition to spending time on the sand
and in the water, visitors can hike the
trails for a different perspective of the
beach: vast, breathtaking, cliff's-edge
views reminiscent of the West Coast.
Whether in the eastern, western,
northern, southern or central part
of the state, Virginia's state parks offer
a myriad of recreational activities.

Favorite Virginia State Park:
New River Trail State Park is a gem in southwest Virginia. It's
the longest rail-to-trail in the commonwealth at nearly 58 miles
in length. Much of the trail parallels the New River, one of the
few rivers that runs south to north. The trail passes through
mountain tunnels and over thirty trestles and bridges. Hikers,
cyclists and equestrians enjoy mountain scenery, historic sites
and unique geological formations along the way.

Favorite Virginia State Park:
I'll say High Bridge right now. It has hiking (walking), biking,
great views and history. Plus, I direct ultramarathons, and
we hold two very successful races there (a 50k and a 100k).
The park staff and communities are tremendous.

Our favorite state park is Pocohontas. The location (it's about
15 minutes away from both of our houses), the variety of
boating activities, the great hiking and biking trails and the
wonderful park rangers are several reasons why this park is
on the top of our list.
