In his epic
work, " The
Wasteland, " the
great poet T.S.
Eliot told us that
April is the
cruelest month.
We may or
may not agree
with Eliot's ironic assessment of
April. But February - for sure - is
the shortest (and often the coldest)
month of the year, a time when we
can find ourselves suspended in the
depths of winter.
So it is that, with Valentine's Day,
we make a conscious, concerted
effort to divert our attention to
warmer thoughts and matters of
romance.
Our cover story this issue offers
ideas for romantic getaways to help
get us through the month's frigid
reaches. Virginia has a broad palette
of interesting, quaint and scenic
communities and rural territories.
All are within an easy day's drive for
most anyone in the Commonwealth.
What better way to take
your mind off winter's grasp than a
relaxing weekend away with your
loved one?
February is also down-to-business
time for the General Assembly
(2014 is a long session) and our
state government. This issue includes
our annual legislative guide,
which contains photos and contact
information for all of Virginia's
delegates and senators, as well as
district maps of their jurisdictions.
The legislative guide is inserted
between pages 20 and 21, and it's
attached in a way that you can pull
it out and save it for future reference.
This issue also features an
introduction to our new statewide
officers - Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Lt.
Gov. Ralph Northam and Atty. Gen.
Mark Herring - on pages 34-36.
Sometimes in February, we get
an early taste of spring weather, a
sneak preview of things to come.
Like romance and politics, these
vernal foreshadowers can help ease
us through the month's often harsh
- albeit brief - extremes.
So here's to romance, good
politics, and an early spring. And
may 2014 be your best year yet! 
