Multi-featured map offers co-op
information during outage events
he Virginia, Maryland & Delaware
Association of Electric Cooperatives'
(VMDAEC) website features a webbased
Outage Map (outages.vmdaec.com)
that allows more than 1.2 million electric
cooperative member-owners to see where
outages are occurring in electric cooperative
service territories across the three-state area.
The map refreshes automatically every
15 minutes and shows outage data reported
by member cooperatives. As Brian Mosier,
the VMDAEC's vice president of member
and governmental affairs, notes, " Some
electric cooperatives report outages
automatically at all times, while other co-ops
report their outages manually every few
hours only during major outage events. "
The map is colorful and easy to read and
understand. Users also have the option on
the top right-hand side of the box containing
the outage map to change from counties to
cooperatives, so that you can view outages
by electric cooperative.
In addition to its online Outage Map
viewer, the VMDAEC has developed a new
app for mobile devices. The app includes
user-friendly features such as color-coded
illustrations of outages by county, by

electric cooperative and sortable lists.
Here, you can get real-time status updates
from each of VMDAEC's 15 member
electric-distribution cooperatives in
Virginia, Maryland & Delaware. It also
allows you to contact your local electric
cooperative or visit the co-op's website
with just a simple click.
" On average, electric cooperatives keep
the lights on 99.96 percent of the time; but
in those rare occasions when Mother
Nature's wrath causes the interruption of
electric service, co-op member-owners are
just one click away from finding out the
impact, " explains Mosier. The map will also
assist the association's Safety & Training
Department in facilitating mutual-aid
efforts among electric cooperatives within
the three-state region and beyond, in times
of natural disaster or other catastrophe.
The online outage map can also be
accessed through the new Cooperative
Living magazine website at
www.co-opliving.com.
