Doesn't Have a Political Party

O
n Nov. 3, 2021, Virginia voters turned
out in record numbers to elect Glenn
Youngkin, a former business leader, as
governor. Winsome Sears made history when
she was elected to be Virginia's next lieutenant
governor, the first woman and the first African
American woman to serve in that role.
Virginians chose Jason Miyares as their next attorney general.
Miyares also made history as the first Cuban American to be
elected to statewide office. The balance of power in the House
of Delegates, which added 17 new members, shifted into
Republican control, while the Senate of Virginia remains under
the leadership of a Democratic majority.
Party shifts across all branches of government mean new
opportunities for cooperatives and their members to build
relationships with elected officials and share the cooperative story.
Cooperatives thrive no matter which way political headwinds
may be blowing largely because of their commitment to the
first cooperative principle - Open and Voluntary Membership.
Cooperatives are always nonpartisan, ensuring that all members

feel included and accepted. This allows cooperative boards
to focus on the best interests of their member-owners when
engaging with elected officials across the political spectrum.
Good public policy knows no political affiliation. No matter
which party may be controlling the levers of government,
cooperatives work hard to maintain a seat at the table for policy
discussions surrounding energy, the environment, economic
development, workplace safety, broadband and more.
Later this month, representatives from cooperatives across
Virginia will visit Richmond for Legislative Day, where they will
advocate for a legislative agenda that benefits their members.
They will educate members of the Virginia House of Delegates
and Senate about the cooperative difference and the unique
policies that enable co-ops to best serve their members.
