The evening
of Dec. 5, the
two finalists
from three cover
contenders in
the Cooperative
Living/Facebook
Winter Scenes
Photo Contest became clear: Aaron
Riddle's image of his beloved softcoated
wheaten terrier, Dusty, dashing
through the snow and Doug
Puffenbarger's photo of whitetail
deer in wintry woods.
The final decision was placed in
the hands of our loyal Facebook
followers who voted into the wee
hours of Friday morning. In support
of Dusty, one Facebook follower
enthusiastically wrote, " This is the
perfect cover shot! " From the
opposition's camp, someone wrote,
" What says Virginia in the winter
more than Virginia whitetail deer
foraging in the snow in beautiful
Highland County? " In the spirit of
the season, Riddle announced that,
should Dusty win, he would donate
his prize ($100) to his local chapter
of the ASPCA.
By dawn on Friday, it was evident
that Dusty the dog would be making
his Cooperative Living magazine
debut this very issue. And no
re-counts needed, as runner-up
Puffenbarger conceded defeat early
by posting on our page, " Well, it
looks like the doggie dashing in the
snow is the winner! "
The competition was fierce in
this, our first-ever Facebook-driven
reader-photo contest, with over
350 winter images submitted from
nearly all of Virginia's electric
cooperative territories (from Powell
Valley Electric Cooperative in the
state's far southwest corner all the
way to A&N Electric Cooperative's
territory on Virginia's Eastern Shore).
Two of the three cover-image finalists
came from Shenandoah Valley
Electric Cooperative members. The
third image, the bare tree against
teal winter sky, came from Northern
Neck Electric Cooperative territory.
