GOOD NEWS
Many people are beginning to see the light by working to improve
light sources. New designs and sensor technology both help to
put light where it's needed, when it's needed.
Have you noticed any of these dark-sky-friendly light fixtures
in your neighborhood?
Some cities are taking the lead in making the bright
urban environment adapt to the needs of animals.
Toronto, Ontario, dims the city lights during bird migration.
Along Florida's coast, many cities do not allow lighting
that can be seen from the beach. Bonfires and flashlights
are restricted in beach areas during turtle-nesting season.
WHAT KIDS CAN DO
Talk to your family about your own outdoor lighting.
* Does the light go where it is supposed to
shine?
* Is it too bright?
* Can the light be turned off when not
needed?
At school you could:
* get ideas for a science or art project on

* join or start an astronomy club
* visit the website www.globeatnight.org/index.html to participate
in a Citizen Scientist project and learn how to measure your night
sky's brightness
* write a letter to the mayor about improving the city lights -
sometimes kids get better results than adults!

Constellations, planets,
comets and shooting stars
are awesome sightings.
The best news of all
is that if you learn to
appreciate the amazing
night sky's grandeur and
beauty now, while you're
young, you will most
likely value and protect
it as an adult! 

OCTOBER ISSUE SUPER SLEUTH
Our October issue KIDS' KORNER called on
readers to venture outdoors and show their
nature smarts. One activity tested your ability to
survive as a squirrel by hiding acorns and other
nuts in various locations, then trying to remember
where you put them! Another described how to
create a terrarium from mosses, ferns and lichens.
In the Super Sleuth Challenge, for a chance to
win $25, entrants were first asked to answer a
riddle: " The more you make in the forest, the
more you leave behind. What are they? " The
correct answer was " footprints " and respondents
were also asked to provide the page number
(page 40) on which they found an image that
provides a clue. A second challenge asked future
stewards of the forest to recall the famous quote
about trees from Dr. Seuss' character, The Lorax.
The correct answer, from his 1971 classic book, is
" I am the Lorax, I speak for
the trees. I speak for the trees,
for the trees have no
tongues. "
