beloved flowers of the English garden,
probably because it is the " first-born " ; as
Shakespeare calls it, " Merry springtime's
harbinger. "
A presence in the winter garden with its
crinkly, oblong, evergreen leaves, Primula
vulgaris is also appreciated for its compact
form, ideal for dainty knot gardens or
lining paths. The " primrose path " is known
to be a quite pleasurable way where one is
want to dally! Lovely, you say, but how can
English dainties survive here in the South
through deadly heat and humidity? Plant
breeder Dr. Clifford Parks of Camellia Forest
Nursery has happily answered that question
with a dependable strain of heat-tolerant
primroses in an ever-increasingly delightful
spectrum of colors and patterns.
Dr. Parks traveled to Turkey, south of the
Black Sea where, in moving through a
deciduous woods in the Pontic Mountains,
he happened upon a primula plant and
brought back its seeds. He crossed the
Turkish seeds with seeds from an
Australian friend and grower
whose primula produced
nice, bright
colors with a
wide array of
interesting
patterns.
This cross - P. vulgaris var. sibthorpii -
produced big, healthy clumps of largeflowered
plants with showy patterns and
veining, picotee edging, bicolors, and distinctive
color washes out from the centers.
This new strain could take the heat and
humidity of Parks' garden in Chapel Hill,
N.C., where he has continued selecting
and breeding for years. A proper primrose
for Southern climes was born. For

Primulas are heavy bloomers, forming
tight, rosette buds in February that begin
to open with the milder weather, and they
stay in bloom for weeks. Lush clusters of
flowers arise from each rosette in late
winter. The long-blooming process makes
these plants great specimens to watch
unfurl at close range, another reason to
line a path with clumps of low-growing,
gleaming gems.
