Since the plants do best in shady,
moist locations, they are ideal for planting
under deciduous trees where few
perennials thrive. Their bright yellow and
white markings light up shady areas
where they enjoy a soil enriched with
compost or leaf mold. They can even
handle wet spots and are ideal growing
along shaded banks of streams or
ponds or in moist areas where they will
self-sow abundantly. The only thing that
is challenging for them is summer
drought, so they appreciate a good
mulch. Primroses appear delicate, but
are actually quite hardy and, as such,
they are fancied by all - except deer -
another plus.
Enthusiasts agree on the need to
divide primroses, and they tolerate transplanting
well. Getting to have more
plants on a frequent basis is another part
of their charm. Dig them on a cool day
after a damp spell when the plants will
not dry out, using a pitchfork to get fully
under the roots to lift the clump. Gently
shake out the soil or swish in a bucket of
water to see the divisions clearly.
Separate individual rosettes from old
woody rootstock, and trim roots with a
sharp knife to about 4 inches to help
stimulate fibrous feeding roots. Replant in
soil enriched with organic matter. Plant
the crown at soil level and place the
plants at least 6 inches apart.

again this year or
postpones the
warming weather,
consider putting a
few primroses in
colorful pots to get
the mood-elevating
display going sooner
on a porch or in a cool
sunroom that stays
between 50 and 80
degrees. The sturdy evergreens
do not mind being
transplanted, even in bud, and
grow well in containers. I love
them planted with early
flowering bulbs such as
grape hyacinth
(Muscari) or miniature
narcissus, whether in
pots or in the garden.
So if you feel dreary
at the tail end of this long
winter, add cheer to the first
of the year with an anti-depressant
centuries old: plant primroses.
