A Toy with Benefits
Today, over 50 years later, the Hula Hoop is still making the
rounds, with a modern emphasis on health and physical fitness. Gyms
and studios offer classes of hoop dancing, using a larger, weighted
hoop for strengthening abs and burning calories. Combined with
music, hoop exercise can be fun and entertaining.
Circles of vibrant, pulsating lights can be seen burning through the
darkness on college campuses like JMU in Harrisonburg, Va. High-tech
Hula Hooping, with a variety of mesmerizing maneuvers, is a popular
physical and meditative activity for students.

Sleuth Challenge shared the history of
pumpkins and other squash as a valuable
food source for the early peoples living in
both North and South America, detailing the
Native American method of cooking a
cleaned-out pumpkin whole, with milk, spices
and honey inside.
For a chance to win $25, entrants were
challenged to explain why pumpkin is
referred to as one of the " three sisters " and
find a clue in the magazine that supports this
statement by giving the page number where
it is located. The corn-bean-pumpkin drawing
on page 34 illustrates how these three vegetables,
when planted together, benefited
each other: the corn stalk offers a climbing
support for the pole beans to grow up, the
pole beans provide nitrogen in the soil for the
corn, and the squash creates a living mulch to
block out weeds and to
conserve soil moisture
for the pole beans and
