profiles the Drug
Store Grill, located
in Brookneal. It
was recommended
for review by Paul
Bennett, a Southside
Electric Cooperative
director who lives in the
beautiful, rolling countryside near
Red House, not far from Brookneal.
While I haven't yet dined at the
Drug Store Grill, I feel a special connection
to it. In the 1980s, I lived in
Appomattox County, and each
spring, when Buggs Island Lake's
striped bass ascended the Staunton
River on their annual spawning run,
I spent a lot of time in Brookneal.
The town's on the Staunton, and
there's a public boat ramp there.
During those years, I got to
know Ricky Pritt, who ran a country
store (Pritt's General Store) at
Sugar Hill, on the road from Appomattox
to Brookneal. We got to be
friends because I'd stop at Ricky's
store to pick up ice, drinks and
snacks on my way to fish. Ricky
and I went out on the river and
fished together a few times. Ricky
was a great guy: bright, hard-working,
a big bear of a man who was
friendly to all he met.
When Paul Bennett told me the
Drug Store Grill was operated by
Robin and Josh Pritt, I asked if they
were related to Ricky. Paul said
Ricky was Robin's husband and
Josh's dad, but that he'd passed
away two years earlier. I was
stunned. It's sad how we lose track
of friends.
I've never met Robin or Josh,
but I hope to soon. I called Robin to
introduce myself and make sure it
would be okay with her and Josh if
I did this little piece on my long-ago
friendship with Ricky. She said yes,
she thought it'd be a nice remembrance.
Life
reminds us to appreciate
and be thankful for many things.
I'm thankful I had the chance to
meet and become friends with
Ricky. I hope I soon have the
chance to meet his family at the
restaurant Ricky built. 
