Summer vacation
is a favorite topic for youngsters. It's a
time when families pack up the car
and head off to the beach, the mountains
or other places to get away for a
while and make memories.
When I was growing up, Virginia
Beach was my family's usual summervacation
destination, but one year we
went to Florida. This was in the early
1960s, before air-conditioning was
standard automobile equipment, and
neither of our family cars had air
conditioning. Although sedans were
generally larger then than now, five
people (mom, dad, three kids)
stuffed into a car, all four windows
down, for all the hours it takes to
drive from Richmond to Florida,
down the peninsula and back, made
for a memorable trip.
With the three kids in the back
seat, there were multiple conflicts on
an hourly basis. In all that car time,
my brother, sister and I became familiar
with the full arsenal of parental
threats employed to quell such conflicts.
The ultimate was, " One more
word and we're going to turn this car
around and go back to Richmond, "
which actually happened a few times,
although the northbound diversion
generally lasted only a few minutes.
One ran on for 10 minutes or more,
which really shut us kids up, at least
for a couple of hours.
In the early 1960s, Florida was a
different place. There were wondrous
(to a youngster, at least) roadside attractions.
Two I recall were the Monkey
Jungle and the Serpentarium,
which was full of reptiles and featured
venomous-snake " milkings " on a regular
schedule. Great stuff for a kid!
Other memories from Florida
range from the glass-bottomed boats
at Silver Springs to the broad beaches
and clear waters of Miami. As much
as anything, though, I remember the
time we spent together as a family, in
the sweltering heat of a green Chevy
Impala, headed into adventure.
