Hats off to the
JULY 2016
winners in our annual
Youth Art Contest,
featured beginning on
page 13 of this issue.
We present to our
readership again this
year the work of yet
another great group of young artists.
In its 14th year, the Youth Art
Contest has become an annual rite
of summer for readers of Cooperative
Living. Our contest themes vary from
year to year and generally touch
upon a concept germane to summer.
This year's theme was " My Favorite
Hobby. "
What doesn't vary from year to
year is the effect of the contest. The
colorful, fanciful imagery issuing
forth from hundreds of creative minds
across the Old Dominion reminds us
that through the eyes of the young,
life is ever wonderful.
Congratulations are in order -
as well as a very special thank you -
to our best-in-show artist, Mihika
Dusad, who is featured on this issue's
cover. She and her parents, Meenal
and Amit Dusad, were most gracious
and went to great lengths in preparing
for our cover photo.
Photographer Laura Emery was
particularly impressed with the care
and precision Mihika showed in
getting ready for the photo shoot, as
well as the family's kindness and
hospitality in accommodating Laura
during the photo session.
Reviewing and judging the contest
entries is a high point for this
magazine's staff each year, even
though choosing the best from each
of the six grade levels is an alwaysdifficult
task.
So to all of our contestants in the
2016 Youth Art Contest, thank you
for your effort, your interest and your
entries. We say it each year, and we'll
say it yet again now: In our eyes,
you're all winners. 
