As we enter the
second half of the
year (can you believe
it?), some sad news
and some happy
news.
First, the sad news.
Lizzie Wyant Wood,
at 112 the oldest
Virginian and the
subject of Cooperative Living's May
cover story, passed away June 3.
Lynn Coffey, a friend of Lizzie and
her family who wrote Lizzie's story for
Cooperative Living, let us know of
Lizzie's passing following a short illness.
Lizzie was, as always, cheerful and
loving till the end, Lynn says. Lizzie
was a person who brightened others'
lives. Her story in the May issue of
Cooperative Living generated more
positive reader response than anything
the magazine has published in a long,
long time. Lynn's letter can be found in
this issue's Mailbag section.
Now some happier news: This issue
includes the results of our annual Youth
Art Contest. The topic, " Animals, "
generated a bumper crop of contest
entries, and the judging panel faced a
particularly daunting task selecting a
winner in each category, Kindergarten
through Grade 5, and Best in Show.
Our best-in-show artist, Hanlin
Zhang, is a rising fifth-grader who likes
pandas and the color pink. It took her
three weeks to complete her winning
art entry, which she worked on during
art class in school.
Hanlin's winning entry is a picture
of a Dalmatian. She told our
photographer, Laura Emery, that she likes
dogs because they're playful and loyal,
but doesn't have one as a pet ... yet.
Hanlin enjoyed playing with the
prop stuffed puppy that Laura brought
along for the photo shoot. Laura says it
helped Hanlin feel more comfy about
being photographed.
" She named the puppy Spotty, "
according to Laura. And Hanlin was
delighted when Laura told her Spotty
was hers to keep. 
