Mailbag
LIZZIE WOOD PASSES AWAY JUNE 3
It is with great sadness I write to the
readers of Cooperative Living, informing
them of Lizzie Wood's passing on
June 3, 2017.
It has been my supreme honor to have
known this godly woman since her 100th
birthday in 2005 when my husband Billy
and I were privileged to meet Lizzie. I later
interviewed her and wrote her life story in the
Backroads newspaper.
We kept in touch over the years and
when she celebrated her 112th birthday
this past Feb. 20th, I wrote one final
article about Lizzie, who by that time
was certified as Virginia's oldest
living person, and submitted it to
Cooperative Living magazine. Many
thanks to Editor Bill Sherrod, who
was kind enough to publish the
story in the May issue.
By the outpouring of letters in
the June Mailbag section, people
were obviously touched by this
amazing lady and her humble
philosophy of life. I know I am a
better person by knowing her and
her wonderful, close-knit family.

many dog shows together and meals at her
home. Was always treated like a member of
her family. Still miss her every day. This was
a wonderful family and to the ones left
behind: grieve, as I know you will, but
then celebrate the life of this truly
wonderful lady! "

farm owned by Lizzie's daughter, Lottie
Yowell (now deceased), and her husband
Ed, and went to school and played with her
grandchildren Linda, Judy (my age),Woody
and Debbie. They were a wonderful family
