IN MEMORIAM
R. WAYNE BROWNING
R. Wayne Browning didn't
live with electricity until he was
about 8 years old. So he had a
personal stake in making sure
that everyone had access to safe,
reliable and affordable electric
power.
A former chairman of the
board of directors of the Virginia,
Maryland & Delaware Association
of Electric Cooperatives, Browning
was an integral part of the A&N
Electric Cooperative board from
October 1981 until his death
on May 27 at the age of 88.
" Wayne will be sorely
missed but there is no doubt his
contributions to A&N Electric
Cooperative will stand the test of time. His steady hand
has helped ANEC become a better cooperative and he
put the cooperative principle of concern for community
into practice every day, " says Butch Williamson,
president and CEO of the Tasley, Va.-based co-op.
Browning will posthumously receive the Electric
Cooperative Leadership Award from the VMD
Association in July.

THE JOY OF BARN QUILTS
I was delighted to see Martha Dillard
on the cover of the May issue of
Cooperative Living and read the article
about her joy to
spread the beauty
of barn quilts.
I also share her
passion for making
and displaying their
colorful designs.
It's a wonderful way
to brighten up a
neighborhood.
The current theme on our fence is red,
white and blue for Memorial Day, Flag
Day and 4th of July. Our barn quilts
reflect calendar celebrations. When I'm
driving by buildings and fences, I am
envisioning where I'd hang a barn quilt
to add a pop of color and art. Take a

SAY CHEESE BRINGS SMILES
In the midst of
all the gloom and
doom around us
everywhere, I've
about worn out May's
Say Cheese page lifting
my spirits with those
smiling kids and their
animals. Little Dean
and his Buff Orpington
chicken could come as a prescription
to cure depression.

the Hall of Fame at Chowan College
in North Carolina, where he was a
football and baseball standout. He
moved on from Chowan, then a
two-year college, to the University
of Richmond, where he was also a
top football player for the Spiders.
In the co-op world, Browning
served for more than 19 years as
secretary-treasurer of ANEC, as well
as serving on many other co-op
committees. He was chairman of
the VMD Association board from
2010 to 2012 and served with
distinction for many years on its
Communications & Public Relations
Committee, which he chaired for
several years.
Browning and his wife Mary Will have welcomed
guests at Bay View Waterfront Bed and Breakfast, and
lived there since 1961.
" I grew up with average means, but I now have a
beautiful wife, nice children and plenty to eat. I'm just
blessed, " he told Cooperative Living magazine in 2004.
Wayne is survived by his wife, five children and four
grandchildren. Tributes can be shared with the family
