mister-dripper or moving
water at a shallow
level is best
for the bird's small
proportions.
Besides eating
flower nectar, hummers
enjoy tree sap, pollen
and insects. In fact,
hummingbirds act as
efficient exterminators,
eating small bugs like
aphids, gnats, and
spiders, making
pesticides unnecessary
in a hummingbird
garden.
Then, commandeering
silk from the spider's
web, they deftly
weave it into cushiony
lining for the nest and
use it for adhering
lichens from the trunks
of large trees to the
outside of the nest as
camouflage. Cinnamon
fern is a wonderful
plant to include in this
garden as the fuzz at
the base of the fronds
is the hummer's favorite
material for lining the
nest. They also like
pussy willow or other
soft catkins, plant
fibers, and dandelion
down for cozy insulation.
The
one to two eggs
in a ruby-throated
hummingbird clutch
are fascinatingly miniscule,
about the size of
peas, and incubation
usually takes 12-14
days. The hatchlings
grow so quickly, they
are ready to fly and
leave the walnut-sized
nest in about three
weeks, an amazing
cycle to observe.
