Cooperative Living June 2014 - 37
* When the nests freeze in the fall, the remaining larvae die
and become frozen treats for squirrels, skunks, woodpeckers
and blue jays.
CALLING ALL
MYTH BUSTER
* Of the 15,000 species of stinging wasps in the world, 95
percent of them do not sting humans. Only female wasps
can inflict a sting. They do not seek out humans to randomly sting; however,
if you are perceived as a threat, you will be stung.
THANK A " STINGER "
* Worker wasps and hornets feed on destructive caterpillars like armyworms
and corn earworms.
* They often eat the flesh of dead animals (part of nature's cleanup crew).
* Yellow jackets are minor pollinators when they visit flowers.
SPIDERS
FACTS
* Spider silk is the strongest of all natural fibers.
* Baby spiders and some adult spiders often emit a strand of silk
and travel by catching a ride on the wind. This is called ballooning.
* Spiders are timid around people and will scurry away if disturbed and seldom
bite unless in self-defense.
MYTH BUSTER
* Not all spiders make webs. Some actively hunt for their prey.
* Daddy longlegs is not a spider. It's a non-venomous arachnid belonging to
the group harvestmen.
THANK A SPIDER
* Spider venom has been used in designing new drugs for health care.
* Spiders are natural controllers of insect pests.
(perhaps the most universally feared and hated animal group)
FACTS
* Snakes do not have sternums (breastbones). Their floating ribs allow them
to move fluidly and to swallow items larger than their own head.
* Most snake species lay eggs but some species give live birth.
* Snakes smell with their tongues.
* Snakes don't have eyelids.
* Snakes will try to avoid humans but may bite
if threatened. Don't ever crowd a snake.
MYTH BUSTER
* A snake cannot grip its tail with its mouth
and roll away like a wheel.
* Snakes are not slimy. They are covered with dry scales.
THANK A SNAKE
* Rattlesnake venom is used to treat certain illnesses and for poison serums.
* Snakes feed on insects and rodents that can harm crops.
* Snakes play an essential role in nature's ecological systems as
predators and prey.
Most likely your only unpleasant encounters with summer's wildlife will
result in itches and stings.
STOP and THINK before you react. What happens next will depend on
your knowledge of the animal, your good judgment and a lot of luck!
Maybe this same advice
should also apply to animals
that come upon another species.
Do you think curiosity killed
this cat??
Lucky for the foolish feline
that it was a harmless garter
snake!

SUPER SLEUTHS:
Thousands of years ago, a blood-sucking creature
was used to treat everything from gangrene to
headaches. In today's modern medical setting, this
same segmented worm, with suction cups at both
ends, is used in critical wound care in large hospitals
including the world-famous Mayo Clinic.
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration,
this vampire of the worm world has aided in the
healing of skin grafts and limb-attachment surgery,
and also emits a natural anesthetic that minimizes
pain.
For a chance to win $25, do the following:
* Identify the blood sucker and give the page number
where it is located.
* Enter online at www.co-opliving.com, or send
answers with your name, address and phone
number to: Cooperative Living Super Sleuth,
P.O. Box 2340, Glen Allen, VA 23058-2340.

MARCH/APRIL ISSUE
SUPER SLEUTH
Our March/April issue KIDS' KORNER Super
Sleuth Challenge tackled the complicated concept
of time, taking readers on a journey back to
the earliest ways of noting the passage of each
day, such as sundials and water clocks. They
learned that the earliest mechanical clocks were
developed about 700 years ago. By the 1700s,
clocks were improved to include a face and two
hands that allowed a person to tell time to the
minute.
For a chance to win $25, entrants were
challenged to find the representation of a unique
clock hidden in the magazine and give its name
and page number, as well as provide the name
of the official timekeeper for the United States.
The correct answers are page 8 (atomic clock)
and the U.S. Naval Observatory
Master Clock, located
at 3450 Massachusetts Ave.
in Washington, D.C. Our
$25 winner is Ethan Mortier
from Centreville.
Congratulations, Ethan!
