Volatile Fuels

us are filling up our gasoline containers and
cranking up engines for the first time this year.
Gasoline is the major fuel source used to power mowers
and other lawn-care equipment, as well as boats, motorcycles,
small tractors and four-wheelers.
It's so much a part of our everyday living that we
can forget how dangerous this
volatile fuel can be if not properly
handled or stored. Liquid gasoline
does not burn, but its vapors do.
Since these vapors are heavier than
air, they move along close to the
ground and can collect in low areas.
It's so much a part
of our everyday living that
om a match or lit cigarette to a hot
exhaust pipe or any type of spark, can ignite these
vapors, causing a fire or explosion.
Gasoline can also cause adverse health effects.
we can forget how dangerous this
volatile fuel can be if not properly
handled or stored.
Contact with the skin causes it to dry and crack.
Prolonged breathing of gasoline vapors can cause dizziness,
nausea or vomiting. Siphoning gas by mouth can
cause you to accidentally swallow
some, which can lead to vomiting. If
gasoline enters your lungs, it can
cause a form of pneumonia that
can be fatal. It also contains a toxic
chemical called benzene, which is a
known carcinogen.
HERE ARE SOME PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING GASOLINE:
* When filling a container, remove it from your vehicle and set the container on the ground.
Do not smoke or use a mobile phone during the filling process.
* Before transporting gasoline, tighten both the container cap and vent cap and
secure the container so it will not slide around or tip over.
* Before refueling a piece of gas-powered lawn-care equipment, turn off its
engine and allow it to cool. Move the gas container at least 50 feet
away from the site where you refueled it before restarting the engine.
* Always wash your hands after handling gasoline. If any spills
on your clothes, remove that clothing immediately.
* Store gasoline in approved metal or plastic UL-labeled
containers. Gasoline should be stored in a well-ventilated
shed away from your house, rather than in an attached
garage.
* Never use gasoline as a cleaner, solvent or
charcoal lighter.
* Keep gasoline safely stored away from
children and pets.
