Each one of these little bees, which
are blue to green metallic in color, will
do the pollination task of as many as 300
honeybees! They do not have to be rented
or especially cared for in any way.
I made blocks from two pieces of
two-by-four nailed firmly together and
then drilled cell holes about an inch
apart with a 5/16-inch Forstner bit. It is
important that the holes stop about half
an inch from the bottom of the wood
and that the holes be smooth on the
inside, also that the nest be fastened
securely on the south side of a tree
(check the Internet or ask your agent).
The only other advice I can give is
that you use untreated wood ― cover
the face of the thing with chicken wire
about 2 inches out to keep birds away
from the holes and the bees will start
using it the first spring. You will likely
have one to two holes filled that first
year in each nest you put out; that is
enough bees to take care of a couple of
fruit trees. The second year there will be
more holes filled.
Like bluebird nests you have about
one day to clean these nests before they
are refilled. Take advantage and use your
drill bit, and then bleach and rinse well.
They will reuse.
I apologize to the beekeepers who are
trying to sell honey, but for those of you
out there who are trying to pollinate
your crops, there is a better way! I have
done it and it works well - 200 of these
bees will pollinate several acres of fruit

your neighbors' as well.
Note: If you have flowering bushes/
trees like forsythia or cherries that are
covered with bees in the spring, you will
notice that most are honeybee-size and
blue or green metallic in color. They are
all around you but they have never
stung you, have they? They are pollinating
the flowers and will do the same
with commercial fruit trees. These are
orchard bees.

FINDING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Forty percent of those who
responded to the 2015 Allianz Life
New Year's Resolution Survey said
their primary resolution is managing
their money better.
For some, money management may
mean simply budgeting and saving,
while for others it means seeing the
bigger picture for money more clearly,
including retirement planning and
investments.
Depending on the scope of your

financial resolutions, a financial
advisor may be able to help.
One good way to begin your
search for a financial advisor is to
ask friends and coworkers for references.
References from people who
are or were in a similar financial situation
to your own may be able to
provide useful information.
If references are not forthcoming,
you can go directly to the licensing
boards to find an advisor near you.
The Certified Financial Planner
Board of Standards is the nonprofit
standards-setting and certifying body
that administers the Certified
Financial Planner (CFP®) certification
program in the U.S. Its website
(www.cfp.net) allows you to search
for CFP professionals near you and
check the certifications of any advisors
you meet. CFP professionals
must pass an exam to obtain their
designation and complete continuing
education to maintain it. They are
held to a fiduciary standard, which
means they must advise with your
best interest in mind and without
regard to their own financial benefit.
For this reason, many CFP professionals
work for a fee or hourly rate
instead of on commission.
