Some butterflies have a dirty little secret ... they
like to hang out around mud, dung and decaying
flesh. Several blue beauties were caught in this
activity, called puddling, and are hiding out
somewhere in this magazine.

MARCH-APRIL ISSUE
SUPER SLEUTH
Our March-April KIDS' KORNER Super Sleuth shared
springtime traditions around the world and offered
several ways to celebrate the coming of longer days. For
a chance to win $25, readers under 18 were asked to
find out the origins of an experiment involving eggs (a
symbol of fertility and birth long-associated with the
vernal equinox), explain the conclusion and find eggs
hidden in that issue. The Chinese are often cited as
originating the practice of standing eggs on end during
the first day of spring. Just as the equinox symbolically
restores balance to the world after a season of darkness,
the experiment of balancing an egg on end during a
day with equal hours of day and night was seen as a
sign that all nature was in
harmony. The correct answers
were that the equinox has
nothing to do with balancing
an egg, because this can be
done on any day of the year,
