 DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS?
Our March-April 2017 History Mystery
subject was Mary Johnston (18701936),
a novelist and women's rights
advocate from Botetourt County who
was educated at home by tutors due
to frequent illness during childhood.
She grew up with a love of writing,
and went on to publish 23 books, two
long-narrative poems and a play. In
1900, Johnston became the first
woman to top the best-seller lists with
her novel, To Have and To Hold. A
close friend of Gone with the Wind
author Margaret Mitchell, she was an early member
of Virginia's Equal Suffrage League and later in her
career wrote to condemn the practice of lynching. Reader

TRAPPING, RELOCATING
ANIMALS IS ILLEGAL
After reading the letter, " Mouse
Letter Was Cringe-Inducing, " in
the March-April issue, I felt it
necessary to let the readers know
that it is illegal to trap and relocate
animals under Virginia law. A game
warden explained to me that the
reason for the law was to prevent
sick animals from being introduced
to a new environment and
therefore spreading disease to a
new population.

bigger chunk of ice could be responsible

Sound weird? Well, many commercial
buildings are already using ice-based
technology to do just that.

Ice-chilling your building, properly
known as cool thermal storage (CTS),
operates on a fairly simple principle: Make
a lot of ice during the night, then use that
ice during the day instead of an AC
compressor to keep the building cool. This
method for air conditioning can shift 95
percent of the energy air conditioning uses

magazine, from the well-written editorials
to the fun photos to the articles about
people and places are great, and the
informative pieces on energy and safety
