Stay safe while taking care of your yard

any people look forward to warm weather to get back
outside and do some yardwork. While sprucing up your
garden and landscaping, keep these tips in mind to help
minimize the chance of injury:
1. Any time you will be working hard, take 10 minutes to stretch
and warm up first. This will go a long way in preventing injury
to your back. Before lifting anything heavy, bend from the knees
to keep stress off your back. Whenever possible, use a cart or
wheelbarrow to move large, bulky items.
2. When using a shovel or rake, stand with your feet apart and
one in front of the other and switch the front foot every 10
minutes. It is a good idea, regardless of the type of activity, to
change up what you are doing frequently to help keep your
muscles moving and minimize stress injuries.
3. With warm weather comes a number of irritating plants, so
wear gloves. They will not only protect your hands, but also
help improve your grip on tools.
4. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect your skin
from irritants and debris, and apply sunscreen regardless of
how much the sun is showing. UV rays come through the
clouds the same as when it is sunny out.
5. When pruning trees and taller shrubs, be aware of overhead
wires and careful to keep ladders, trimmers and other
equipment away from them.
6. Before you do any " hands-on " weed removal,
be sure you know how to identify
poison ivy, sumac and oak.

come in contact with any
toxic plants, wash
the affected area
immediately with soap and water to help reduce the chances
of skin rash and irritation.
7. Choose the right tool for the job. Using equipment that is
ergonomically suited to your body will increase your safety as
well as your ability to get the job done in a timely fashion.
8. More than 50,000 people each year sustain injuries from
trimmers, lawn edgers, pruners and power saws: Read the
manufacturer's instructions carefully before using these tools.
Whenever using a tool that has moving parts, it is a good idea
to wear eye protection.
9. More than 60,000 people are treated in emergency rooms
each year for lawn-mower injuries. To avoid becoming a
statistic, never operate a mower in bare feet or while wearing
loose clothing. When refueling, make sure the engine is off
and cool. Don't spill gasoline on a hot engine, or smoke while
pouring gasoline. Never leave a running mower unattended.
10. Take frequent breaks, especially in hot weather. Drink plenty
of water to stay hydrated and sit in the shade if you start to
feel overly warm.
Working in the yard is a wonderful way to vary your exercise and
make your home more beautiful. With these safety tips, you can get
out there with confidence!
