CALLING ALL
Start by inviting someone to take a walk with you,
explaining that you don't want to go fast, especially if it's
a hot day. While moving at a leisurely pace, take in the
sights, sounds and smells along the way. It's really not
necessary to have a destination; just meander and stroll
along until you and your companion are either all
tuckered out or all talked out. Think like a tortoise,
not a hare!
July - The National Picnic Month
Almost certainly you will be eating
out in the open air several times
during the summer, especially in
July, the favorite vacation month ...
maybe at a huge 4th of July family
reunion at the park with tons of
relatives and tons of food. Or
perhaps you'll be on a blanket at the
beach enjoying a small family picnic
from a basket.
Picnics come in all sizes. As long
as the meal happens in the great
outdoors, it doesn't matter what or
where you eat. So, why not grab a
sandwich and drink, head out the
door to a shady spot and make your own private picnic happen in your own
backyard! (And you might want to take that library book along that you've
been meaning to finish ... outdoor book time is the best.)
July - National Watercolor Month
July is also a perfect month to take your
imagination outdoors and turn it loose at an
easel. Using an array of watercolors, paint
whatever comes to mind ... a flower, a
favorite animal or a happy summer memory.
Some people challenge themselves to paint
31 pictures during July, one for each day. If
you feel inspired to meet this goal, the
finished pictures could either decorate your
room's walls or fill a large scrapbook. Or
even better, you could share some of your
summer art with shut-ins who are confined
to the indoors.
The next two-and-half months are yours, so go for it! Discover new ideas,

to catch lightning bugs, make s'mores around a fire and blow a few bubbles.
Stay balanced and the rewards of all your chosen activities will make the
summer of 2018 the best yet! n

MARCH-APRIL ISSUE
SUPER SLEUTH
Our March-April KIDS' KORNER Super Sleuth explored
changes in the timetable of biological events in the
natural world, such as the blooming of various types
of flowers, explaining that the science of watching for
signs in nature is called phenology. For a chance to
win $25, young readers were challenged to find a
clue hidden in the magazine (and give the page
number) to identify the name of a popular festival
traditionally held during the first two weeks in
April and give the city where it takes place.
