 DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS?
Walter Reed (1851-1902). Born in Gloucester
County to a traveling Methodist minister and
his first wife, he spent much of his youth in
Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Enrolling in the
University of Virginia in 1867, he completed the
coursework to become a doctor in 1869, two
months before he turned 18, becoming the
youngest-ever recipient of an M.D. from that
university. Enrolling in New York University's
Bellevue Medical College, Reed obtained a
second M.D. in 1870. Dissatisfied with urban
life, he joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps and
was soon assigned posting in the American West.
Noticing the devastation that epidemics could wreak, he later
completed advanced coursework in pathology and bacteriology at
Johns Hopkins University. In 1901, he led the team that confirmed
that yellow fever is transmitted by a particular mosquito species
rather than direct contact. This insight gave impetus to the new
fields of epidemiology and biomedicine, and enabled completion
of work on the Panama Canal.

CENTRAL VIRGINIA BATTLEFIELDS TRUST, INC. SEEKS TO PRESERVE HISTORIC LAND
ith the advent of the Civil War, a terrible scourge would
descend on the tranquil cities and towns of the South.
The conflict would leave behind more than 750,000
casualties and see desolation beyond imagination. A large
number of those casualties, over 100,000, would occur in
the Fredericksburg area.
The warring armies would clash three times there between
1862 and 1864,
making the names
of Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville,
Wilderness and
Spotsylvania indelible
in American history.
The Fredericksburg
area, being approximately
midway between both
warring capitals,
Washington, D.C., for
the North and
Richmond for the
South, was a
predominant reason
for such military
attention. For over
100 years, this area lay
relatively untouched
by development.
But again, with its

proximity to
Washington, D.C.,
and Richmond,
pressure to develop
this once war-torn
area was, and still
is, boundless.
On Sept. 4, 1996,
several dozen
community leaders
gathered to organize
a group dedicated
to saving the most
important sites in this
area that yet remained
unprotected. The grassroots Central Virginia Battlefields Trust
(CVBT) grew out of that session. CVBT then received the official
non-profit 501(c)(3) status necessary to begin raising funds.
Quickly, the new organization played a pivotal role in
acquisition of the Montfort Academy site atop Marye's Heights.
This area was the site of Confederate artillery during the 1862
battle of Fredericksburg. Several preservation groups collaborated
to acquire Montfort in June 1997. Some months later, the CVBT
bought 100 acres on the south side of Route 3, just east of the
Chancellorsville intersection where Lafayette McLaws'
Confederate division fought. The Trust then purchased a further
12 acres in two parcels directly across Route 3 from the wedge.
Generous bequests, grants, as well as the group's loyal and
