Chilling Summer's Sizzle
S
chool is out, or almost out, and summer is in. It's happy dance time for you (and
your teachers)! After working hard for three seasons, it's a great reward to have
10-12 weeks for doing what you want to do.
But even though summer break is loved for its lighthearted and freespirited
mood, it does come with its own set of headaches. When the
dew point and air temperatures begin to steadily rise, watch out!
Sweltering heat and smothering humidity will quickly turn a
summer celebrator, like yourself, into a miserable, hot mess.
Being outdoors in extreme heat can be hazardous if common sense precautions aren't followed. Yet, if
you stay hydrated, keep sunblock applied regularly and monitor your time in direct sun, you can still go
about your summer activities.
While you can't hide from hot days, there are DIY things you can do to stay cool, contented and
collected, even when you aren't feeling that way.
DON'T FIZZLE FROM SUMMER'S SIZZLE
It's wise to have a chill-out plan in mind before the hot
weather makes you feel frazzled and grumpy. Amazingly, you
can restore your energy and improve your mood just by
cooling off your five senses.
Cool to the Touch
When your skin becomes
hot and sticky, and a trip to
the pool isn't happening, try
these ideas for a quick fix.
* Place damp towels or
washcloths in the
freezer for several
hours. Put around neck,
wrists, behind knees
and on top of feet for a
gradual cool down.
* If you're feeling daring,
freeze several wet T-shirts
until they are stiff. Then challenge your
friends to see who can be the first to
put one on!
* Place ice cubes in a small tub of water
and then dunk your feet.
* Fill a spray bottle with water and
keep in the refrigerator for a quick,
fresh spritz.
* Don't forget to run through the
hose sprinkler spray.
Cool Tastes
Liven up your tired taste buds with these
treats and you'll perk up, too!
* Make a pitcher of homemade lemonade.
* Prepare iced peppermint tea. It contains
menthol that is so cool and tingly some
people even spray it on their body!
* Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches,
tomatoes and cucumbers.

Cool Sounds
Some summer sounds are so bothersome that they almost
make your ears hurt, especially on a hot, muggy night when you
can't fall asleep. The nonstop humming of floor fans and air
conditioners or a chorus of crickets can keep you wide awake.

* Make healthy, fruity homemade popsicles. Lots of recipes
and videos are available online.
* Create a " brown cow " drink
by filling a tall glass with
vanilla ice cream and root beer.
Cool Sights
Science says that looking at
blue and green colors will
activate cool, calming thoughts.
With that in mind, set your eyes on these ideas when the
mercury starts rising.
* Look at pictures of snow-capped mountains, rushing
streams and the rolling ocean. Next, gather up some blue
and green paints, brushes and a large sheet of paper. Then,
create your own cool places where you would like to chill
out on a smothering, hot day.
