REAWAKENING
Your Inner Explorer
Everyone is born an explorer
T
he desire to move and investigate begins
when a baby starts crawling. Inching forward on
all fours, the tiny traveler tugs and pulls on people
and furniture (maybe the family dog) until standing
on two feet is achieved.
Once upright, balanced and stable, the empowered
explorer feels free and ready to roam in any direction ...
until mom says " Whoa! "
Obviously, you can't remember your very earliest
ventures. But you may recall childhood memories of
racing down a sandy beach, with bucket and shovel,
eagerly digging for shells and treasures. Or maybe
you loved hiking in the woods and collecting strange
souvenirs to take home and keep in a special box.
Exploring comes naturally and easily to young
children, simply because they love to travel about
and find new things.
Now that you are older and busier, your exploring
days may seem like a distant memory. Random
exploration may no longer be a priority in your life.
But before discounting it, consider participating in the
following summer-break investigation. It will take as little
or as much time as you decide to devote to it. All you do
is travel about, observing and recording ... easy peasy.
Who knows? Maybe you'll recapture your exploring
spirit, especially if you poke around with the enthusiasm
of the little kid you once were!
GETTING STARTED
WHO You and any friends or family. Extra sets of searching eyes often make exciting discoveries.
WHAT Follow directions on the survey on page 29 and become aware of all the biodiversity (the variety of
living things) in your surroundings. Grab a backpack and take along:
A small notebook & pencil.
You may want to record:
* the date and location
* your findings
* any sketches or thoughts
* any questions you want answered
These are also helpful tools ... binoculars, camera, field guides
WHERE In your backyard or a nearby park.
WHEN Whenever convenient!
WHY To strengthen your observation skills and awaken your curious nature! Sure, you know the difference
between bugs, birds, flowers and trees, but how many members of each group can you identify?
