BIODIVERSITY SURVEY
Discovering the life around you
CALLING ALL
SUPER SLEUTHS
1. Observe all Trees. Count the different species (types) of
trees in your location. Name and record as many as you can.
2. Look for Plants - flowers, bushes and weeds.
Count the different species. Name and record as many
as you can.
3. Note all animal species that you see. Don't forget
insects and spiders! Count the different kinds, name and
record as many as you can.
4. Be aware of human intervention in this area. Have
trees been cut down or maybe planted? Is there a man-made
nature trail or pond or garden? Record your observations.
5. Look up, down and all around at your surroundings.
Listen closely for sounds floating on the air. Then find
the most amazing science-related thing to record in your
notebook. Be mindful of nonliving marvels, such as a
beautiful sunset, a rainbow or even a hornet's nest in a tree.
Take a photo, draw a picture or write a poem about this
special discovery.
6. In about 4-6 weeks, revisit the same area and note
changes. Depending on your geographic location, time of
year and weather patterns, you may notice leaves changing
color, flowers and weeds going to seed and different insects
appearing. Human intervention may be evident. Record
date and your findings in your notebook.
This survey is a reminder that the natural world deserves
a closer look. There is so much to see and appreciate!

While you were completing the
tasks on the biodiversity survey,
you were playing the role of an
ecologist. This is a scientist who
studies plants and animals and
looks for connections between
living organisms and their
environment. If you continue
to enjoy exploring nature, then
perhaps a job in ecology is in your future! (Hay Seed and City
Slicker have a few career suggestions).

The March-April Super Sleuth talked about nature's first
