Dare?

Join in summertime adventures
ummer is a great time to be adventurous, try
new things and maybe even discover your inner
boldness. Bright, sunny days stretch into long,
dusky evenings, so there are plenty of hours available
to seek new thrills.
It's super exciting to attempt something different ...
something that you have never done before. But, at the
same time, it can be downright
if you get a case of the " What ifs! "
Maybe you're interested in playing soccer but you
start worrying ... What ifI can't run fast enough to
be on the team?
Or perhaps going to summer camp for a week
really sounds inviting but you begin fretting ...
What if I get homesick?
Those butterflies-in-the
stomach feelings of anxiety,
doubt and hesitation are
normal because no one wants to goof
up while trying something new. And it
happens to people of all ages ... just ask
an older relative how he felt the first time
he was learning to use a computer or
how to text on a smartphone or do
the self-checkout at the grocery store.
Th n ask him how he felt
ft er he mastered these new skills.
It's all about being willing to take risks and not
being afraid to fail. Like this wise quote from Jennifer
Lim says ... " Mistakes are proof that you're trying. "
June is an ideal time to dare
yourself to leap out of your comfort
zone and test your courage. There is
even an official day to get started,
JUNE 1-
NATIONAL
DARE DAY
On this day, friends and family think up fun, nondangerous
dares to perform. They then challenge one
another to break out of their shells and give the tasks a
try. Some could be silly dares, like balancing a spoon
on your nose for 20 seconds. Others might be more

scary, too, especially
Do you always need a little nudge to try new things
or do you jump in like a complete daredevil?
Or are you somewhere in the middle ... more of
a cautious adventurer, not too shy to try something
daring but not overly bold either?
Perhaps a review of your " daring history " will give
a good answer.
Look over the checklist above, on the next page
of random actions that could be considered daring.
1. Check off those you have already experienced.
2. Add any other daring events that you have done
but are not listed.
3. Put a ring around those you might like to do later,
either during a different season or when you
are older.
meaningful like singing the National Anthem. And
there is always the crowd-pleasing Truth or Dare game
where players get to either answer a specific question
honestly or perform an action or command.
With a little practice, timid guys and gals might find
themselves empowered with enough boldness to last an
entire year ... just because they dared to try something
new in June!
