FACT: The human body does not
store electricity. It is perfectly safe
to touch the victim and give first aid.
Imagine if someone died because
everyone was afraid to give CPR!
FACT: Lightning often strikes

Although your odds of getting struck by lightning are
almost one in a million, on average 28 people die from
strikes each year, according to the CDC. The best strategy
for keeping your summer outdoor activities safe is to have
a keen sense of weather awareness and be ready to act.
Do not wait for the thunder to roar before you go indoors!
STORM WATCH
Once you have safe shelter, take this time to fully observe
nature's amazing power.
If you are concerned about the storm's proximity, follow
the math. Count the seconds between the lightning and
thunder and divide by 5 to calculate the approximate distance
in miles.
Allow your ears and eyes to capture all the spectacular
noises and sights associated with the storm.
Think of words that help explain what you are seeing and
hearing. Say the words out loud. Do you notice that they sound
exactly like what they are describing!

For all its destructive power,
lightning is still a beneficial force
for the earth. It breaks apart nitrogen
molecules in the atmosphere, which then combine with
oxygen and fall into the ground as nitrates when it rains.
This " chemistry in the air " creates a super
fertilizer that makes field crops, garden
veggies and flowerbeds thrive. And that
keeps every farmer/gardener happy!
Now that you are enlightened about lightning, do not
lighten up your response to its presence!
Enjoy all that summer offers, but stay alert for distant
rumbles in a darkening sky.
