When I was young (a long time
ago), I remember Jim Croce singing
about time in a bottle, and the band
Chicago asking, " Does anybody
really know what time it is? Does
anybody really care? "
Consider all the interesting ways
we talk about time: we can have it
on our hands, we can bide it, it can
run out, and sometimes we do
things just in the nick of it.
We categorize time as past,
present and future. But when you
think about it, the present (where
we always are) is elusive. There's
never really a here and now. That
point's either coming or gone.
And time certainly seems to
pass more quickly the older we get.
My Aunt Gina once explained it to
me in a very logical way. She said,
every year that passes extends the
time you've been here, so each successive
year is a smaller portion of
your life and seems to go by more
quickly than preceding years.
Makes sense to me, and Gina's
already passed the 90-year marker,
so she should know.
Time's an ethereal idea.
And speaking of time, isn't it
about time to put this recent
wretched winter behind us and start
thinking about a garden? Our cover
story offers a fresh look at the
power of gardening - or more
specifically, " the power to do good
through food " produced by gardening,
a concept central to the core
mission of the Allegheny Mountain
School.
It's sort of a variation on the
idea described in the old saying,
" Give a man a fish and he eats for
a day, teach him to fish and he eats
for a lifetime. "
Here's hoping times are good
this spring as we emerge from a
rough winter. 
