Summer phlox (P. paniculata)
produces large clusters of fragrant
blooms that last from June until
September. One of the reasons
old-fashioned phlox fell out of
favor was that it tended to be
subject to powdery mildew, but
new varieties are mildew resistant.
Still, it is important when
planting this tall-phlox type to
allow 24 inches or more between
plants to promote good air
circulation and to water from
below. Mulch about 2 inches
deep starting 3 inches from
the crowns to help them handle
the heat, and water well during
the summer.
One of my favorite all-time
flowers is the pure-white sturdy
3- to 4-foot-tall phlox " David, " the
2002 Plant of the Year. It blends well
with everything. Pale-pink " Bright Eyes "
is a popular cultivar, and " Flamingo
Pink " is a good, highly mildew-resistant
variety. Virginia gardening expert Andre
Viette favors a light lavender blue with
white eyes - " Katherine " - hybridized
by his father, Martin Viette.

Creeping pink phlox cascades over a wall
and softens rough edges of hardscape.
Consider planting phlox near your

cut before the flowers fully open to retain

proven to relax anxiety, so plant some
phlox near your hammock for a little
aroma therapy to promote those sweet
dreams. We could all use some family
harmony, so allot plenty of these plants,
oldies but goodies, to enhance your
garden this spring.
