surrounded by
some of the most
majestic vistas to
be found anywhere.
She often gets
inspiration for her writing from these
beautiful natural surroundings. And
while Anne's column targets younger
readers, it's good reading for kids of all
ages. In this issue, she encourages us
to take a look outside and observe
nature - investigate nature's timetable.
Be a nature detective, maybe even a
citizen scientist.
That's good advice. If we could remind
ourselves to stop, look, listen, smell and
feel the world around us on a regular
basis, chances are we'd all be better off.
Spending time with nature or, at a
minimum, spending time disconnected
from today's firehose-flow pace of life, is
a wonderful way to regain mental
equilibrium and clear the thought
channels. As bard Shakespeare said of
sleep, natural communion, too, knits up
the raveled sleeve of care.
It's somewhat disturbing to ride past a
school-bus stop and see six or eight
youngsters waiting for the bus, ignoring
each other, all with eyes transfixed on
flat devices in the palms of their hands.
At some point, you hope they put the
phones in their pockets and watch a
cardinal fly across the road or, even
better, talk with the other kids at the bus
stop about the cardinal in the tree.
Gardening is a great way to connect
with nature. In this issue, writer Sari
Carp tells us about edible landscaping in
our cover story. Garden Muse columnist
Paula Steers Brown expands upon the
idea with " Potager Pizzazz, " all about
kitchen gardens.
Lots of good ideas for ways to enjoy
nature, grow things, and regain balance
too often lost in life today. And
remember, spring is only three
weeks away! 
