over the following list of common seasonal occurrences. (If you think of more, just
add them on another sheet of paper.) Then, challenge each other to be the first one
to discover these signs of a new season. A little contest, maybe with a reward at the
end, keeps everybody engaged and on the lookout!
Keep the list near a calendar for easy check-off throughout the coming year. Put
the family member's initials and date beside each observation as it is first witnessed.
Tally up the findings at the end of the year and declare who is the champion
phenologist! Most important, remember to ask an older adult if he/she thinks that
any of the incidents are occurring earlier or later than normal.
PHENOLOGICAL FINDINGS
heard spring peepers
discovered a patch of wildflowers
saw robins
watched a groundhog arise out of a hole
heard someone suffering from seasonal allergies
saw hummingbirds fighting over a feeding station
watched a butterfly or moth hatch from a chrysalis
caught fireflies (lightning bugs)
watched bats emerge for evening feeding
heard frogs croaking and ribbiting
noticed leaves starting to change colors
got stung by a bee
saw frost on the car windshield
followed wild animal tracks in the snow
Searching and investigating your environment will take time and patience. With
practice you'll become known as a nature detective with a keen eye, an alert ear and
an inquisitive mind full of your own science questions! 

event is scheduled. This is
most evident when festivals
are planned around the blossoming of specific trees.
Organizers of the nation's greatest springtime
celebration, held during the first two weeks of April, are
finding that the peak blooming of the festival's honored
trees is often happening too soon, which has an effect on
the viewing and planned activities.
According to phenological studies from the Smithsonian
Institute, earlier warming temperatures are causing these
spectacular trees to bloom 7 or more days sooner than in
the past few decades.
In response to nature's new timing of the blooming, the
festival dates have recently been extended into late March.
