WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE
GUINEA HENS?
Last December I noticed a flock
of guinea hens in my yard. I
called them pea hens until my
parents told me they were probably
guinea hens. At first I heard
them - they have a unique sound
(a cross between a goose and a
chicken). I have only seen them a
few times in my yard. Where did
they come from, and where did
they go?!! I live in Temperanceville,
Va., just off of Route 13.
I'd love to see a column about
guinea hens.

WINTERGREEN HAS
PHENOMENAL ADAPTIVE
SPORTS PROGRAM
I always look forward
to receiving my
Cooperative Living
magazine because of the
local articles and features.
We are a family of
skiers, so I flipped right to
the article about local ski
resorts in the February
issue. I was surprised that
there was no mention of the
adaptive ski programs available
at some of those resorts
you featured.
I know firsthand that Wintergreen
has a phenomenal Adaptive
Sports Program (WAS) that offers
ski lessons during the winter and
boating lessons over the summer.
I work in pediatrics and have
seen the wonderful things they do
via a number of my patients. My
husband has been a volunteer skiing
and boating instructor for
WAS for the past nine years. Their
website is wintergreenadaptive
sports.org.
Massanutten also has an
adaptive program, though I am
not acquainted with their program.
I suspect many other resorts
have programs as well.

READER TAKES ISSUE WITH
HUNTING METHODS
Following recent letters
regarding hunting, as a property
owner, taxpayer and hunter of
72-plus years I take issue with
the means of hunting used by
many hunt clubs and the
suggestion of tradition.
Today, clubs equip their dogs
with GPS tracking collars to
know within 10 feet the
location of the dogs and deer
they're pursuing. Using vehicles
and CB-type radios, members are
directed to where deer will be
crossing, usually a private or
public roadway. Shooting from a
roadway is illegal so radios
convey any
approaching law
enforcement, also.
This type
hunting isn't
traditional
or even
ethical, and in
no way
resembles
days gone
by when
clubs gathered
on
lands
they had
permission or
leased to hunt on. Clubs
would organize standers, then dog
handlers would bring the dogs
through to move the deer past
the standers.
Furthermore, current law
affords landowners little or no
right to know who is on their
property if the trespassers are
without a gun or vehicle and
claim to be retrieving their dogs.
These are the only substantive
provisos.
