STEPHENS CITY PLANS BIG BASH
Cooperative Living does such a great job
highlighting events in the localities the
electrical co-ops serve that I thought I
might give a " shameless plug " to a festival
in my Virginia hometown.
Each Memorial Day weekend, Stephens
City in the Shenandoah Valley honors its
past and salutes its present in the
Newtown Heritage Festival. For the past
four years, I've been honored to be president
of the Festival board.
One of the privileges that comes with
the office, I suppose, is getting to invite all
and sundry to our little burg for this annual
get-together. It's nothing special, really
- just good food, great entertainment, a
craft show, a parade, and a number of historical
exhibits topped off by the best fireworks
display in the Northern Valley -
and yet truly special all the same. It's
neighbors and friends enjoying each other's
company.
This year - May 22-23 - we will be
dedicating our new Veterans Memorial on
Saturday morning, a ceremony followed by
a chicken barbecue lunch prepared by a
local vendor (Bear Garden Mountain
Barbecue). The " must-see " in our Saturday
entertainment lineup is a 7 p.m. concert by
the nationally acclaimed bluegrass group
The Boxcars. An added attraction this year

ADDRESS
EATERY CLOSED, FARMERS
MARKET OPEN
The STORIES FROM THE ROAD
article in the March-April issue was well
written. I wanted to let readers know,
however, that the Tavern Restaurant
located in the historic Rice's Hotel/
Hughlett's Tavern in Heathsville is no
longer open.
We would, however, very much like
to invite people to the Farmers Market,
which opened April 18 for the season.
The Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.
until 1 p.m. the third Saturday of each
month through October.
Thank you for a wonderful magazine!

VIEWPOINT WAS A PICTURE
OF GRACE
A picture of grace, Richard
Johnstone's " An Awed Stillness " in the
March-April edition paints a rich
tapestry, delivering a poignant reminder
of the price for freedom paid by so many.
General Chamberlain's words show the
great solemnity of the surrender ceremony
while evoking a sense of the respect
and honor and grace on display April 12,
1865. Richard's closing words give honor
to Chamberlain's rich literary style. Few
people write like that anymore.

VIEWPOINT article titled, " For the Cost
of a Postage Stamp " in the February
issue of Cooperative Living. I look forward
to reading all of his VIEWPOINTS.
I can honestly say that I never thought
that I would say that a magazine from an
electric cooperative would be my favorite
but, alas, it is. I find myself heading to
the mailbox after a stressful day at work
hoping to find it in there. When it does
come I like to get myself a snack, settle
down on my couch, and spend some
time escaping from the world for a time
to read through the magazine. There are
so many different features to enjoy; it is
like visiting with an old friend. I learn a
little about my wonderful state, history,
people, happenings, recipes, and, yes,
even about energy.
As an example, I just finished reading
March-April's issue of the magazine and
was very touched by the VIEWPOINT,
" An Awed Stillness. " While I knew about
the meeting of Lee and Grant at
Appomattox, I had never read this
account of the surrender of General Lee's
