VIEWPOINT EVOKES FAMILY
MEMORY
I just finished Richard Johnstone's
March-April VIEWPOINT, " An Awed
Stillness. " His column and Margo
Oxendine's have my attention as soon as
the magazine arrives and after that, I
peruse the rest of the issue.
In 1976, my husband, Lee and I decided
to do a write-up for the family on my
great-grandfather, James Henry Norris,
who was captured in Pickett's Charge at
Gettysburg. He spent the rest of the war
at Point Lookout, Md., and walked home
to Albemarle County when the war was
over. We included all the battles in which
he fought and ended up with a 12-page
epistle! During the time we did research,
we visited Appomattox on the anniverHISTORY

'AWED STILLNESS' A TOUCHING
VIEWPOINT
I was a part of Cooperative Living
magazine's development and served as
a contributing author for almost three
decades.
Richard Johnstone's March/April
VIEWPOINT, " An Awed Stillness, "
touched me as much as anything I've
written or read in this excellent
publication. It comes just at the right
time when we as a nation are searching
for a light at the end of the tunnel.
May we learn from the lessons of
the past so that a new day will begin
in honor of all those who have sacrificed
so much for this great nation.
Mr. Johnstone, you have done and
continue to do the cooperative family

ANOTHER TICK-REMOVAL
TECHNIQUE
I found the recent article on
tick removal very interesting and
while I have personally used a
tweezer, it hasn't always been
successful.
Having grown up in the Midwest
and enjoyed trapping, hunting
and fishing, I have had more
than my share of ticks.
What I have found to be the
most effective method of removing
ticks from myself, friends and
dogs was a method I learned from
an old friend.
We use a small length of common
thread, tie a small loop and
slip it over the tick, tightening it
up while pressing it against the
skin where the head of the tick is
in the skin.
Pull the loop tight and then
with a quick jerk the whole head
usually comes out clean.
Just an alternative I thought
readers might like to hear about.
