Marie and Milan
Majarov and their
work on behalf of
monarch butterflies ―
fit well with the feel
of the season: rebirth
and growth.
Marie and Milan are retired clinical
psychologists who have repurposed their
lives and now devote themselves to
citizen science. They're part of an
enthusiastic swarm of volunteers across
the nation who offer time and talent to
assist in various scientific endeavors for
the betterment of our natural world.
They are, to use a pollinator pun, the
worker bees who help make field
research happen.
Concurrent with their enthusiastic
immersion in the study of nature, the
Majarovs have become very talented
outdoor photographers. The outdoor
imagery accompanying the story about
Marie and Milan in this issue is
exclusively from their photography
portfolio. Their photos and Marie's
words have graced the pages and covers
of Virginia Wildlife and other outdoorthemed
publications, as well.
I met Marie and Milan when I joined
the Virginia Outdoor Writers
Association, which they've served as
board members and officers for a
number of years. VOWA is the
organization through which Cooperative
Living sponsors its annual collegiate
essay-writing award. This year's winner
has been chosen and will be unveiled in
an issue coming soon.
What's impressed me most about the
Majarovs is their devotion ―to each
other and to their passion for nature.
Their work as citizen scientists can be
daunting (imagine waiting, camera in
hand, for hours on end for a butterfly to
emerge from a chrysalis) and the pay is
poor (i.e., non-existent). But the rewards
are profound: the recovery more than
2,000 miles away of a migratory
monarch butterfly they raised, tagged
and released was compensation enough
for Marie and Milan.
The Majarovs are the kind of folks
whose selfless devotion helps make
the world a nicer place, one butterfly
at a time. 
