Protect Yourself Against Vehicle Theft

t's finally warm enough outside to enjoy
fresh breezes while driving with your
windows down. But no matter how
short a time you'll be away, it's best to
fully close all windows as well as lock
the doors when you need to leave your
vehicle unattended.
Did you know that vehicle thefts cost
consumers a staggering $8 billion each
year, and that approximately one-third of
your auto insurance premium is to pay for
potential theft? The FBI reports there were
an estimated 700,000 motor-vehicle thefts
nationwide in 2013, ending an eight-year
consecutive run of decreasing thefts.
Vehicle thefts can happen even in rural
communities, and you might be surprised
to learn that thieves don't just target
expensive foreign vehicles or sports cars.

in Virginia, according to State Farm

In addition to parking your car in a
well-lit area before locking, here are other
ways to deter theft:
* Keep your purse and any valuables out
of sight, in the trunk, glovebox or
under a seat.
* Never hide a second key in your
car - thieves know where to look
for them.
* If parking on a city street, turn your
wheels toward the curb and apply the
emergency brake to make it more
difficult to tow or roll your car away.
