 DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS?
Our February 2017 History Mystery
subject was Carter Woodson (1875 -
1950). Born in Buckingham County, this
African-American historian, author and
journalist studied part-time while
working as a coal miner in West Virginia.
After serving as a high school principal
and earning a degree in literature from
Berea University in 1903, he continued
his education to ultimately earn a Ph.D.
in history from Harvard University in
1912. One of the first scholars to study
African-American history, Woodson
wrote numerous books and articles, which are now housed
in the Library of Congress. In February 1926, he launched
" Negro History Week, " the precursor to Black History
Month, to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln
and Frederick Douglass. Reader Irish Windless of LaCrosse
was our $25 winner. Congratulations, Irish!
celebrating itself and its heritage.
I'd also like to make this an invitation to

May 27. Sample what our festival has to
offer - good music, food, craft vendors,
a down-homey parade and the best
fireworks in the Northern Valley -

of a small-town atmosphere.

AND THE HOME OF THE
BRAVE
I just want to say thank you to
editor Bill Sherrod for his January
2017 Cooperative Living Inside
Story column, reminding us of
the 75th anniversary of Pearl
Harbor. I also want to thank
Laura Emery, field editor, for
her Cover Story on The
Mighty Pen Project.
What a great way to
honor our military men and
women by having them write
their stories. I hope I get to read every one

of them. How good of founder, David
Robbins, and executive director, Rachel
Landsee, and Prince George Electric
Cooperative CEO Mike Malandro for
making this happen. I like what Mr.
Robbins said in the article: " We want to
serve those who have served. "
The reason I took extra note of these
two articles is because I had just finished
reading two great stories, The Red Bandana
by author Tom Rinaldi, and All the Gallant
Men, by Donald Stratton with Ken Gire.
Yes, incredible stories, and two incredible
men, serving our country who made
unbelievable sacrifices. One is about the
horrible 9-11 terrorist attack where a
young man named Welles Crowther gave
his life so others could live. The
other is about a young sailor
in 1941 named Donald
Stratton, who is a 94-year-old
USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor
survivor. These stories just take
your breath away, throughout
the book.
Even though there is much
tragedy in both stories, it is so
inspiring to read about those
who put others above their own
life. It just makes me more
thankful for the men and women
who serve us in so many ways. I respect
them and know they are the reason we
still can sing " America the Beautiful "
and our national anthem. We are the land
of the free and the home of the brave.
