What to expect at
your next physical

An annual physical might
feel a bit awkward, but
you'll be glad to know
your current health status.
hen was the last time you had a physical? If you're like 38 percent of Americans, you might not remember. That's okay: Make 2018
the year you make an appointment to see your primary care physician. Use this opportunity to get baseline numbers on your
health while discussing any concerns or asking any questions you have about your health. Here's what to expect when you go:
Vital signs: A nurse or medical technician will measure your blood pressure with a cuff, your temperature with an oral or ear thermometer,
and record your pulse, breathing rate, height and weight.
Questions: Some checks your doctor will perform require only verbal responses, such as inquiring about your personal and family
medical history.
Examinations: These require your doctor to touch you.
*Head, neck and tonsil: Your doctor will feel your head and neck to check for inflamed tonsils, swollen lymph nodes and
other abnormalities.
*Lungs and heart: Your doctor will listen to your heart and
breathing with a stethoscope.
*Abdominal: Your doctor will put gentle pressure on your
abdomen to check your organs and might listen to your stomach
sounds with a stethoscope.
*Age- and sex-specific exams: Some physicians will perform a
breast and pelvic exam for women and a genital and hernia exam
for men. If this makes you uncomfortable, speak to your doctor's
office about your concerns when making your appointment.
Laboratory tests: Your doctor likely will have an in-office or offsite
lab perform a urinalysis and take blood to do a complete blood count,
as well as check your cholesterol and fasting blood sugar. If you are in
treatment for cancer, diabetes, heart disease or other health problems,
these lab tests are particularly important. You can also request a
screening for sexually transmitted infections. If needles make you
uncomfortable, let the technician know.
To make the most of your time spent at the doctor's office, write down
any questions or concerns you think of ahead of time, and take them
with you when you go. When you make your appointment, ask if
you'll need to fast for bloodwork. Most importantly, don't feel
embarrassed or worry; an annual physical might feel a bit awkward,
but you'll be glad to know your current health status.
