92-YEAR-OLD READER DELIGHTED
BY RECIPES
I am 92 years old and German-born. I
just wanted to say what wonderful recipes
you have always included in Cooperative
Living magazine. The best soup we have
ever eaten was " Hearty Corn Chowder "
[submitted by reader Yvonne Burnette of

was Calvin Coolidge Green (1931-2011).
Calvin was born in New Kent County,
graduated from Virginia State University
and taught high school biology and
chemistry in Richmond for over 30 years.
He also earned degrees in theology and a
doctorate in pastoral counseling. Following
his service in the U.S. Army during the
Korean War, Green became president of
the New Kent County branch of the
National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People. Ten years after the 1954
U.S. Supreme Court decision on Brown v. the Board of
Education outlawing school segregation, he filed suit against
New Kent County schools for requiring African-American
students to petition the school board for permission to switch
to the school for white students. In 1968, the U.S. Supreme
Court ruled in favor of Green and required the county to
desegregate immediately, forcing the remaining process of
integration statewide. Reader Sandra Copeland of Suffolk was

Sutherland and featured in February's
Commonwealth Kitchen column]. It
was simply delicious. We even made it
with fresh corn - and it is just
wonderful!
We've also made " Creamed Cabbage
with Cheese " and " Sweet & Sour Cabbage
with Bacon. " You are bringing so many
delicious plates to the table. There are
still more recipes I am going to make, so
I can hardly wait for the next magazine!

COLUMN CALLING LINEWORKERS
HEROES STRIKES A CHORD
WITH READER
Many thanks for the Viewpoint column
in the March-April issue of Cooperative
Living magazine. Calling lineworkers
heroes struck a chord with me, as my father
was one of those heroes many years ago.
He climbed those wooden poles often in
the course of doing his job. Yes, he certainly
was a hero, and much more besides.
Thanks for highlighting these brave
souls! Thanks, also, for your magazine,
which I read cover to cover each issue!

TRY A FOUR-LEGGED MOUSE TRAP
I read your story about your mouse
infestation. I can commiserate as I live
near the woods and every fall, they move
into my house. About 13 years ago, I
acquired a cat from the CASPCA here in
Charlottesville. She was about 3 years
old and had just been a mother when she
was brought to the SPCA. This little one
(she only weighed 8 pounds) turned out
to be a terrific mouser. She is a totally
indoor cat who " takes care of her territory. "
For some reason, I started keeping count
of her " kills. " As of yesterday, there are 56
since I adopted her and she is 16 years old.
Never underestimate an old cat! And,
she is really neat; no mess to clean up. I
just toss the intruder out the door for
stray cats to find.
If you decide to get a four-legged
mouse trap, try not to get a neutered
male. Mostly, they just sleep as they get
older. And a kitten should not have been
taken from its mother before she has had
time to teach it what mice are and what
the cat should do with it. An older
kitten, from a litter of barn cats, would
be a good choice.

take on a working friend to help you
with your mouse problems.
