ignited HER passion in the natural
world. I hope that Peyton considers
writing as another career option, as she
is very talented.
In response to Brenda Ferguson's
MAILBAG inquiry about getting rid of
carpenter bees, I offer this suggestion.
Carpenter bees are native pollinators
that are an important part of the
ecosystem. Luring them into suitable
nesting places where they won't destroy
your property, while making your
wooden structures less attractive, is
therefore the best solution.
Paint or coat your eaves (and other
wooden surfaces) with polyurethane, or
use pressure-treated wood, as the bees
prefer untreated wood for nesting. Give
the carpenter bees a place to nest other
than your home. Find a shady spot in
your garden close to flowering plants,
and install a wooden post or birdhouses
made of softwood to attract the bees.
Carpenter bees live in wood, but
they eat nectar and pollen, so plant
flowers that attract them away from
your house and closer to the " artificial
habitat " you create for them.

citizens by use of unchecked government
regulations without
Congressional oversight.
Through the use of climate-change
myths, the EPA is about to destroy
the coal industry and cause all
Virginians to have to pay increased
costs for electrical energy production.
The EPA and the federal government
are using tyranny to control electric
cooperatives and the rest of the
utilities in America and it needs
to be stopped.
As citizens, we should resist this
overuse of government regulations
and control of energy resources and I
think electric cooperatives and the
utility industry in general should do
the same. Climate change is a false
science used to extend government
control over companies and citizens.
Carbon dioxide is not pollution! Coal
can be used to provide electric energy
in a clean way with the use of scrubbers
and other available technologies.
Solar and alternative energies are useful
too, but cannot take the place of
coal, oil, and other large energy
sources. Natural gas is great, but the
costs will climb eventually and rates
will climb as well.

WOODPECKERS WILL HELP YOU
FIND CARPENTER BEES
This may be a bit late, but, on the
subject of carpenter bees, this picture
(above) was taken just inside our
open pole-barn. If you don't realize
the bees are invading, the pileated
woodpeckers will " help " you out!

MORE ON DEALING WITH
CARPENTER BEES
Responding to Brenda Ferguson's
September MAILBAG letter about getting
rid of carpenter bees, we have a
log house and the bees love it. I use a
tennis racquet. Works great and every
once in a while I get a double-bee kill.
