The holiday season
is at hand: a time of
good cheer, a season
for giving thanks and
enjoying food, family
and festivity.
It's a time for
traditions, for
looking back and
remembering
Thanksgiving feasts, Christmasmorning
gift-giving, caroling and the
many other activities that give the
season its meaning.
Most everyone has favorite holiday
memories. Mine include many from
childhood, and one involves decorating
Christmas trees my family would pick
from a sale lot at our church.
Decorating the tree was a big thing.
The evergreen fragrance of the tree,
the glow of the old-style, bulky, multicolored
incandescent light strings,
the feel of the fragile glass ornaments,
some dating back a couple of family
generations, all became part of what
are today sweet seasonal recollections.
Our cover story describes Christmas
on Tangier, a small island off Virginia's
Eastern Shore in the Chesapeake Bay.
The people who call Tangier home
are a rugged lot. They have to be,
because they are surrounded by the
often unpredictable waters of the bay.
Bill Sterling, Eastern Shore native and
retired editor of the Eastern Shore News,
wrote our cover story and notes that Jim
Schultz, the Santa featured on the cover,
passed away in January 2013.
Bill says Jim was survived by neither
wife nor kids, but is remembered by
many who call Tangier home. He was
known as the " Ocean City Santa
Clause, " a title featured in his obituary,
and he always purchased gifts - nice
ones, too - to hand out to the
children he visited on the island.
Jim's thing was bringing cheer to the
children of Tangier.
So, though Jim Schultz is gone,
he's not forgotten. The joyful, happy
memories he helped create for the
folks on Tangier live on.

home makes her appreciate every moment she's alive.
