START WITH SAFETY
I
t's holiday time, and as a gift giver you probably are perusing your child's
top toy wish list. While buying the hottest and trendiest toys for your child
might be the first thing that crosses your mind, the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) reminds you that safety should always top the list.
Every year, CPSC receives many
reports of children under 15 who
end up in hospital emergency rooms with
toy-related injuries. In 2017, U.S. emergency
rooms treated more than 251,000 toy-related
injuries, with children under the age of 5
accounting for more than one-third of the total.
That number has been pretty consistent during the
last five years, according to CPSC data.
Fortunately, most of the injuries were not
life-threatening; 95 percent of the admitted
children were treated and released. Still, 13
children died in toy-related accidents in 2017,
with seven of those involving a riding toy,
including collisions between a motorized
scooter and a moving vehicle.
Before you buy, follow these simple tips to help your holiday gifts
be a source of joy rather than pain:
Check the label.
Choose age-appropriate toys by reading the age label on the toy. For children
younger than 3, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.
In particular, avoid deflated or broken balloons, small parts or small
balls. The CPSC doesn't regard fully inflated balloons as a threat to young
children, but recommends keeping uninflated balloons away from
them without supervision.

Get safety gear.
With scooters and other riding toys, helmets and safety gear
should be worn properly at all times and they should be sized
to fit. Avoid riding a scooter on a street or roadway with
other motor vehicles.
Be careful with magnets.
High-powered magnet sets are dangerous and should be kept
away from children under 14. Building and playing sets with small
magnets should also be kept away from small children; ingesting a magnet is an
immediate call to seek medical attention.
Practice common-sense safety.
Don't give toys with loose strings, cords or straps to young children,
including toy guitar straps that can wrap around a young one's neck.
And always supervise your child's playtime.
