But DeGenaro's part of the operation,
to land a glider into the Dutch town
of Son, was completed successfully.
" We had been briefed by the 101st
Airborne and we were told that the
Germans were about to collapse and
that as soon as we landed, we could
confiscate vehicles and drive straight
into Berlin, " DeGenaro recalls,
laughing. " Well if you saw the movie,
you know it didn't work out that way. "
DeGenaro landed his glider, with
its 2,000 pounds of explosives cargo
and a munitions expert, without a hitch.
" That landing went fine, " he recalls,
" but not long after I had my first
encounter with a German Tiger tank.
It fired two rounds into a town square
being used as a headquarters by the
82nd Airborne and then sprayed the
nearby area I was in with machine-gun
fire. Luckily, it never hit any of us. "
DeGenaro continued to fly gliders
until the military discontinued their use
in the early 1950s. He stayed in the U.S.
Air Force until 1968, serving some time
in Japan before retiring as a lieutenant
colonel. Five of his brothers also served
in the U.S. military during WWII and
the Korean War. They all made it back
home safely.
DeGenaro later earned a doctorate in
economics at the University of Florida
and taught at Virginia Commonwealth
University for 25 years.
Today, at
nearly 99 years
old, he continues
to give lectures
and participates
in educational
programs that
teach children
and young adults
about World
War II history.
" You know,
it wasn't really a
dream of mine
to see the world
and be a part of
famous historical
events, " he says.
" But I guess
that can just
happen when
you join the
service. " ■
