THE INSIDE STORY
The past two

years, Cooperative
Living has sponsored
a collegiate writing
contest through the
Virginia Outdoor
Writers Association
(VOWA). Last year's
winner was Whitney
Clark, at the time a Virginia Tech
student who wrote about climbing
McAfee's Knob along the
Appalachian Trail near Catawba.
This year's winner is Victor Harangozo,
also a student at Virginia
Tech, who hails from Haymarket in
Northern Virginia. Victor's story is
about a bow hunt in which he bags
a large buck, a deer he named " Mr.
Crabs " for the shape of the animal's
outer antler tines.
The great outdoors has long
been a favorite topic for American
writers, journalists and fictionwriters
alike. From entertaining
tales of hunting and fishing trips to
broader features about nature and
the environment, the outdoor realm
has always offered up a rich lode of
story ideas for writers.
Victor's first-person account
conveys the feel of a winter bow
hunt. It will resonate with anyone
who has ever ventured forth to hunt
or fish Virginia's woods and waters.
There's a magic to the process of
pursuit - preparation, expectation,
immersion and finally, recollection;
reliving the moments. For those
who've not experienced it, it's a
mysterious magic indeed.
Victor's story, in a style reminiscent
of Ernest Hemingway, can stir
the outdoorsman's imagination and
arouse that tingly magic as the cooling
air of autumn settles around us.
For the non-hunter, his words convey
the elements of pursuit. Look
beneath them for hints of that
sportsman's magic.
The story's about the hunt, but
the writing is the point. The writing
is the portal to the magic.
