GLOBAL WARMING, CLIMATE
CHANGE ARE NATURAL
In response to the September
MAILBAG letter " Editorial Was OneSided "
about Jack Reasor's August editorial,
" global warming " and " climate
change " are naturally occurring phenomena.
The earth has warmed and
cooled for thousands of years despite
what miniscule effect humans may have
had upon the environment.
Every time a new government
regulation is imposed or government
intervention is " requested, " we get new
taxes in some form or fashion.
Today almost all industries, including
electric utilities, are concerned with
how their business might affect our
population and go to great lengths to
minimize any negative impacts. It's just
bad business these days for any company
to not be concerned.

BAD ECONOMY IS BAD FOR
HEALTH, TOO
In the September MAILBAG letter,
" Editorial Was One-Sided, " about EPA's
proposal to cut carbon pollution from
existing power plants, the writer cited
many effects this proposal would have
in improving the health of humans.
I don't claim to be an environmental
expert, but many of the world's leading
scientists appear to be in disagreement
on many facets of this debate. I do

one of the earliest brick
homes in Lee County, Va. Built in 1848, it is
known locally as the " Cannonball House. "

When a person loses his or her job
and can no longer provide food and
shelter, the health implications are

'GOODBYE, MR. CHARLIE' DREW
A TEAR
I was very touched by Mr.
Johnstone's September VIEWPOINT
column, titled " Goodbye, Mr. Charlie. "
I wiped away tears as I read it, especially
where Mr. Johnstone wrote about
the only things that his cat wanted:
some food, water, a lap to sit in and a
hand to rub his head.
I wish all pets had someone to love
them like Charlie had. God Bless you.
RIP Mr. Charlie.

ROANOKE AND TRAINS
I enjoyed Deborah Huso's article
about the railroad attractions in
Roanoke ( " Riding the Rails, " September
Cooperative Living). I've been to the
Virginia Museum of Transportation
October 2014/www.co-opliving.com
and the O. Winston Link Museum
and enjoyed both very much.
One small correction: the Norfolk
& Western wasn't the last steam railroad
in the United States, but it was
the last big railroad to use steam
power.
In the next few years, the
Commonwealth of Virginia, in
cooperation with Amtrak, plans to
extend the Lynchburg train to
Roanoke. Right now, the train, which
also serves Charlottesville, Culpeper,
and Manassas and continues to
Washington, New York, and Boston,
has a well-patronized connecting bus
between Lynchburg and Roanoke,
but the train itself should soon carry
passengers to and from downtown
Roanoke.
