Autumn is a
good season to
enjoy the thrill
of the hunt. Your
backyard, a
garden, or a
forest will have
lots of discarded
souvenirs of
summer waiting
for you to
happen upon,
such as:
* bird nests
* skull/bones
* nuts/seed pods
* rocks
* dead insects
* feathers
* snake skins
* empty turtle shell
* bees' nests
* insect parts (butterfly wings, cicada cases)
Chances are good that you'll come across a " living " specimen
of interest. Please be mindful that you will be obligated to provide
food and shelter for it while keeping it for observation.
When your friends ooh-aah about your array of objects, be
ready to share what you have learned about each. Your enthusiasm
might inspire them to create their own curiosity cabinets!

AUGUST ISSUE SUPER SLEUTH
Our August KIDS' KORNER Super Sleuth
contest provided young scholars with advice
and encouragement as they head off to
start the school year, noting that some of the
best teachers in the world come from the
animal kingdom. For a chance to win $25,
entrants were challenged to find the page
with two sketches representing back-toschool
concepts, then provide the phrase
used in everyday language, known as an
" idiom, " that each sketch illustrated. The
correct answers were " page 6, " " busy as a
beaver " and
" reach for the
stars. "
