come in a succession
of series - first Down
Home, then Stories
from the Road, and now, the current
iteration, Crossroads.
Small communities are fascinating.
They are similar in many ways, yet very
much unique; and, every community,
no matter how small or off the beaten
path, has an interesting story (or two).
Every community has character, and
often characters.
This issue's Crossroads subject is the
community of Stickleyville. It's in the far
southwestern tip of the state, about
equidistant between Kentucky and
Tennessee in that tapering point of
Virginia. These are the environs of early
pioneers and settlers, where the country
began to expand to the west.
Stickleyville has changed over time,
but the character of its people remains
one of its great assets. Mary Ruth Laster,
former Stickleyville School principal,
wrote this month's story about her
community and is a good example of the
kind of person who makes Stickleyville
the place it is.
Rick Watson, editor of the Powell
Valley News newspaper, was also very
helpful in making this issue's Crossroads
feature happen. As the local editor, he
knows the communities his newspaper
serves and he knew that Mary Ruth
would be the perfect writer for the
Stickleyville feature.
When we were putting this issue
together, I called Rick at the paper to
get some information about a photo
caption. His receptionist answered the
phone and said he was on the press,
but she'd go get him.
Rick came to the phone and I asked
him if he was literally running the press.
He said with a laugh, " Yes, we're a small
operation. " In addition to reporter,
sports writer, editor, photographer
and pressman, he also does duty as
delivery boy.
That's a country editor's life, and it
reflects the character that defines small
rural communities. 
