CALLING ALL
National Apple Month
October is the official month to honor and
enjoy the gifts of this favored, versatile fruit.
Here's how:
* Visit a pick-your-own orchard with your
family and friends and share a bushel and
a peck of fun and good eating.
* Taste some sweet apple cider (not the hard
kind like those unfortunate colonist kids
had to drink).
* Dip apples (each one on a stick) in melted
caramel.
* Try this easy recipe for a quick snack.
Apple Pizzas
12-oz. container of refrigerator biscuits
½ cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 medium tart apples, peeled, cored, chopped
1 - 2 tablespoons butter
Roll biscuits into 3½-inch circles and place on lightly greased baking sheet.
Combine sugar, flour and cinnamon; mix well. Add apples and mix. Spoon
mixture onto biscuits and dot with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20
minutes, or until edges turn brown ... Yummm!
A Is for Apple Icons
Most apples are not destined for fame. But some have become legendary
because they have stirred creative and imaginative minds in the areas of
religion, science, the arts and modern-day technology. Do you recognize these
famous apples?
* The one that Eve ate (It was believed to be the forbidden fruit
from the tree of knowledge, although the apple is not mentioned
in the Bible story).
* The one that fell on Newton's head (It supposedly inspired the
famed physicist to discover and understand gravity).
* The one that the evil queen poisoned (Snow White ate the
apple and fell into a deep sleep).
* The one on the Beatles record label (Your grandparents will
remember this one).
* The one that Steve built and changed the world (This is perhaps the most
recognizable apple of the 21st century. This logo is known
worldwide and represents the revolutionized technology industry
made famous by Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple products).
The next time you bite into a big, juicy apple, pause and think
about its modest beginnings in America. From a small collection
of seeds and grafts, the apple has been steadily cultivated into a prized fruit as
well as a beloved symbol. It could be said that this humble immigrant has
become " the apple of America's eye! " 
